How often do dogs need a rabies shot? One-year vs three-year vaccines

Este artículo todavía no está traducido al español, así que se muestra en inglés.

How often do dogs need a rabies shot? A puppy gets a first rabies vaccine, then a booster one year later, and after that boosters are typically every three years unless the vaccine or your vet says otherwise. In Ontario, the date that legally counts is the re-vaccination date your vet writes on the rabies certificate.

That's why two dogs on the same street can be on different schedules. One had a vaccine dated for a year, the other for three, and both owners are doing it right.

Below: how the interval gets set, what Ontario law asks of you, and what to do if you've just noticed the booster is overdue.

How often do dogs need a rabies shot? The usual schedule

Most dogs get two rabies vaccines a year apart, then boosters typically every three years, unless otherwise indicated. That's how the Merck Veterinary Manual describes the initial series. Laid out on a calendar, it looks like this:

A typical rabies vaccine timeline for a dog
WhenWhat happensWhy
Puppy, by 3 months of age in OntarioFirst rabies vaccineOntario law requires dogs 3 months and older to be immunized
One year laterFirst boosterCompletes the initial series of two doses a year apart
After thatBoosters, typically every 3 yearsUnless the certificate shows an earlier date

The first booster always comes one year after the first rabies vaccine. The longer interval only starts after that.

One-year vs three-year rabies vaccines: what decides it

The interval your vet records for the vaccine they gave decides it, and that reflects the product and your dog's history. You'll hear people talk about a "one-year" and a "three-year" shot as if they were different things. Really it's about how long the certificate is valid.

A dog getting its very first rabies vaccine, or one whose vaccines have lapsed, usually has to start again, with a booster a year later before the three-year interval kicks in. Proof of earlier vaccines matters a lot here. Adopted a dog with no paperwork? Your vet may have to treat them as unvaccinated.

Then there are outside rules. In Ontario you have to re-vaccinate by the date on the certificate, and a kennel, daycare or another country may ask for proof of its own. Not sure which shot your dog had? Look at the certificate or call the clinic. The "next due" date settles it.

What Ontario law says about rabies vaccination

Ontario's Regulation 567 under the Health Protection and Promotion Act requires every dog, cat and ferret 3 months of age or older to be immunized against rabies. Re-immunization is due by the date on the certificate your vet gives you.

The vaccine has to be licensed and given by a veterinarian, or by someone working under a vet's supervision. You get a certificate and a tag as proof. If a vet states in writing that vaccinating would harm your pet, a medical exemption is possible.

The City of Toronto adds that owners should keep a copy of the vet-issued certificate at all times. If your dog ever bites someone, public health will ask for it, so it's worth having somewhere you can pull up on your phone. The free PetGrid vaccine card puts your pet's vaccines on one PDF with a QR code you control.

Why the rabies booster matters

Rabies isn't a theoretical risk in Canada. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) says bats, skunks, raccoons and foxes are the animals most often linked to spreading it here, and that once signs appear, rabies is almost always fatal in animals and people. Merck notes that the virus usually spreads in saliva through a bite.

Being up to date also changes what happens after an exposure. Merck says a vaccinated dog that may have been exposed should be assessed, get wound care, be revaccinated right away and be observed for 45 days. A dog with no proof of vaccination faces a much harder path, and that's decided by public health and your vet, not you.

If your dog's been bitten or scratched by a wild animal or a bat, call your vet the same day, even if the rabies shot is current.

What if my dog's rabies booster is overdue?

Book a visit as soon as you notice. Until your dog is re-vaccinated they're out of step with Ontario law, and plenty of kennels and daycares won't take them. Your vet will work out how to restart the schedule based on how late it is and what records you've got.

Before the appointment, dig out the last certificate; even a photo of it helps. Mention any reaction your dog had to a past vaccine, and ask what the new due date will be so you can set a reminder this time. In Toronto, Toronto Animal Services' Chip Truck occasionally runs low-cost rabies vaccination clinics, which is worth knowing if cost is part of why it slipped.

Free vaccine reminders in the PetGrid app can email or notify you before the date comes round, and our dog and cat vaccine schedule for Canada lists the other core vaccines that are often given at the same visit.

Preguntas frecuentes

Is the rabies vaccine yearly for dogs?

Not usually after the first two doses. Dogs get a first vaccine and a booster a year later, then boosters typically every three years, unless the certificate your vet issues shows an earlier date.

Is a rabies shot required by law in Ontario?

Yes, Ontario's Regulation 567 requires every dog, cat and ferret 3 months of age or older to be immunized against rabies. Owners have to re-vaccinate by the date on the certificate.

What is the difference between a one-year and three-year rabies vaccine?

The difference is how long the certificate is valid before the next dose is due. A dog's first booster is always a year after the first shot, and your vet decides the interval after that based on the vaccine and your dog's records.

What happens if my dog's rabies vaccine expires?

Book a visit to re-vaccinate as soon as you can. Your vet will decide how to restart the schedule, and until then your dog doesn't meet Ontario's requirement and may be turned away by kennels and daycares.

Do indoor dogs or small dogs need a rabies shot?

Yes, Ontario's rule applies to every dog 3 months or older, whatever its size or lifestyle. Bats can get into homes, and the CFIA lists bats among the animals most often linked to rabies in Canada.

Where should I keep my dog's rabies certificate?

Keep the original somewhere safe and a copy you can reach any time, as the City of Toronto advises. A digital copy on your phone is handy for kennels, groomers and border crossings.
