Lost pet app: how apps help find missing pets, and what they cannot do

Este artículo todavía no está traducido al español, así que se muestra en inglés.

A lost pet app helps you spread the word fast. It turns your pet's photo and your contact details into a poster and a shareable page in minutes, so neighbours, shelters and local groups know who to call. What it can't do is find your pet on its own. An app isn't a GPS tracker, and neither is a microchip, so the app works best alongside a registered microchip, a current licence and a report to your local animal services.

Here's what lost pet apps and lost modes usually offer, where they honestly fall short, and the steps that get the most pets home, with Toronto as the example. If your pet is missing right now, skip straight to the checklist below.

If your pet is missing right now

Take a breath, then work through these in order. Most of them take a few minutes each.

  1. Search close to home first, and ask neighbours to check garages, sheds and under decks.
  2. Report your pet lost to your local animal services. In Toronto, call Toronto Animal Services at 416-338-PAWS (7297) or 311, with your pet's licence and microchip numbers and a photo.
  3. Check the city's online list of strays that have been brought in. Toronto posts animals from the last 14 days.
  4. Call your microchip provider to flag your pet as lost, and make sure they have your current phone number.
  5. Make a poster and a shareable page, then post it in local groups and on doors near where your pet was last seen.

Our guide on what to do if your pet is lost goes through each step in more detail.

What a lost pet app actually does

A lost pet app gets the right information out quickly, and most of them do it with the same handful of tools:

Common lost pet app features, and what they are good for
FeatureWhat it helps with
Poster makerA printable poster with your pet's photo, description and how to reach you
Public page or linkOne link you can paste into neighbourhood groups and messages
QR code on the posterLets someone open the page from a telephone pole
Last-seen detailsTells searchers where to look
Your stored recordsPhotos, microchip status and description ready when you're panicking

Some apps also send alerts to people nearby. Before you count on that, find out how many people in your area actually use the app. An alert only reaches its own users.

A lost pet app is a megaphone, not a tracker. Its job is to get the right information in front of the right people quickly.

What a lost pet app cannot do

A lost pet app can't tell you where your pet is. Only a GPS device worn on the collar can report a location, and only while it's charged and still attached.

It can't replace a microchip. The Ontario SPCA explains that a microchip is a permanent ID the size of a grain of rice, with no battery, read by a scanner at a vet clinic, shelter or animal control. It isn't a tracking device either. And an app can't replace a licence. In Toronto, every dog and cat must be licensed and wear a tag, and the city says a licence gives the contact details needed to get a lost pet home faster.

It also can't reach people who've never heard of it. Shelters and animal services check chips and licences, not every app on the market. The Ontario SPCA stresses that a microchip only works if it's registered in a database with your contact details kept up to date, including after a move, and Toronto's lost pet page says the same.

How finders get pets home

Finders usually get pets home through a microchip scanner. The City of Toronto tells anyone who finds a pet to take it to a vet or shelter to be scanned, and to report strays to 311. A poster with a clear photo and a phone number that works covers everyone who spots your pet before it gets to a scanner, like the neighbour who sees your cat under a parked car on their street.

Toronto Animal Services' Chip Truck offers low-cost microchips for cats and dogs, and the city suggests having your vet scan the chip at the annual visit to make sure it still reads.

A lost pet app checklist before you ever need it

Ten minutes now saves a frantic hour later:

  • Take clear, recent photos of your pet from the side and the front, plus any markings.
  • Write down the microchip number and provider, and check the registration is in your name with today's phone number.
  • Keep your Toronto licence current. It renews every year.
  • Save Toronto Animal Services' number, 416-338-PAWS, in your phone.
  • Set up your pet's profile in the app now, so lost mode takes a minute, not an hour.

How PetGrid's lost mode works

PetGrid's free app includes lost mode. You turn it on from your pet's page and add a phone number or email, a description, where your pet was last seen, and whether they're microchipped (never the number). You get a public page and a PDF poster with a QR code that opens it.

The page never shows your address or your pet's records, and it's kept out of search engines. It lasts 60 days, unless you tap that your pet is home or turn it off sooner. To be clear about the limits: PetGrid doesn't send alerts to the public or to people nearby, and there's no physical tag. The page and poster are for you to share wherever they'll help. If your clinic is on PetGrid, the clinic is told. In the free app on its own, no clinic is.

Because your pet's photos and records are already in the app, you're not hunting for a decent picture when every minute feels long.

Preguntas frecuentes

Is there an app that can find my lost pet?

No app can find a pet on its own; only a GPS device on the collar reports a location. A lost pet app helps you share a poster and page quickly, so people who see your pet can reach you.

Can a microchip track my lost pet?

No. The Ontario SPCA explains that a microchip has no battery and only gives an ID number when it's scanned at a vet clinic, shelter or animal control, so keep your registration details current.

Who do I call if my pet is lost in Toronto?

Call Toronto Animal Services at 416-338-PAWS (7297) or 311, and have your pet's licence number, microchip number and a photo ready. Check the city's online list of strays, too.

Do cats need a licence in Toronto?

Yes. The City of Toronto says every dog and cat must be licensed and wear a tag, renewed every year, and a licence helps lost pets get home faster.

Does PetGrid's lost mode send alerts to people nearby?

No. PetGrid makes a public page and a printable poster with a QR code for you to share, but it doesn't alert the public, and there's no physical tag.
