Pet vaccine reminder app: what to look for

Cet article n'est pas encore traduit en français : il est affiché en anglais.

A good pet vaccine reminder app takes the next due date from your vet's record, repeats on the interval your vet chose for each vaccine, and tells you in time to actually book the visit. That's the whole job. Anything past that is a bonus.

Boosters slip for boring reasons. The certificate is in a drawer somewhere. The clinic's postcard went to your old place in Leslieville. Or the date just came faster than you thought it would. Here's why the dates differ from pet to pet, what to look for in an app, and how to set reminders so you're not guessing.

Why every pet's vaccine dates are different

Every pet's vaccine dates are different because there's no single booster calendar, and that's exactly why a reminder has to follow your own pet's record. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) 2024 vaccination guidelines lay out the main reasons.

Young pets get a series. Puppies and kittens receive core vaccine doses every 2 to 4 weeks, with the last one at 16 weeks of age or older, and WSAVA advises revaccination at or after 26 weeks. After that, core and non-core vaccines part ways. Most modern core vaccines give immunity for many years, so WSAVA says they shouldn't be given more often than necessary. Most non-core vaccines give about one year.

Then there's how your pet lives. Non-core vaccines are picked for each pet based on where it lives and what it gets up to, after a conversation with your vet. A dog who swims in the Don River and boards twice a year isn't the same case as an indoor cat in a condo.

Rabies is its own thing, because it follows the law and the label. In Ontario, Regulation 567 requires cats, dogs and ferrets three months or older to be immunized against rabies, and reimmunized by the date on the certificate your vet signs.

Your vet sets the schedule. A reminder app's job is to remember the dates your vet gave you, not to choose them.

What a pet vaccine reminder app should do

A pet vaccine reminder app should track each vaccine on its own date and repeat it the way your vet said. Lots of apps can send a notification. Far fewer handle vaccines the way vet care actually works, so it's worth comparing them against a list like this one.

Checklist for choosing a pet vaccine reminder app
Look forWhy it matters
A due date per vaccine, not one per petRabies, core and non-core vaccines often fall on different dates
Flexible repeat intervalsSome boosters are yearly and some every few years
A reminder made automatically when you log a vaccineYou will not forget to set one
Email and phone notificationsA backup channel if you miss one
Private lock screen notificationsYour pet's details stay off a screen others can see
Room for the vaccine record itselfDaycares, groomers and kennels ask for proof
Works with any clinicYou should not need to switch vets to get reminders
Clear about your dataYou should be able to see, export and delete what you store

If an app gives you one date per pet and calls it done, keep looking.

How to set vaccine reminders from your vet's record

You can set vaccine reminders from your vet's record in about ten minutes, with paperwork you probably already have.

  1. Find the record. If you don't have a copy of your pet's vaccine history, ask your clinic for one. In Ontario, a rabies certificate has to show the date of the shot and the date by which your pet is to be reimmunized.
  2. Log each vaccine on its own line, with the name, the date given and the next due date your vet wrote down.
  3. Set the repeat to match that vaccine. Use the interval on the certificate or the one your vet told you, and don't assume everything is yearly.
  4. Pick two channels. Email plus a phone notification is a lot harder to miss than either one alone.
  5. Book when the reminder lands. Busy clinics can be booked up weeks ahead.
  6. Update it after every visit, since each new shot moves the next due date.

Clinic reminders or your own app: do you need both?

Keep your clinic's reminders, and have your own as well. Clinic reminders are useful, but they're tied to whatever address, email and clinic were on file. Your own list keeps going when life moves around: you moved or changed email and the old reminders quietly stopped, or you switched clinics.

It also helps when your pet sees more than one clinic, say a regular vet plus a specialty or travel clinic, or when you adopted a pet whose records came from a shelter or another province. And if you'd like monthly preventatives on the same list as vaccines, your own app is the only place that's going to happen.

How reminders work in the free PetGrid app

In the PetGrid app, adding a vaccine with its next due date makes the reminder for you. You can also set reminders for monthly preventatives or anything else, repeating every 1 to 36 months or just once, by email, phone notification or both. The lock screen notification only says a reminder is due. It doesn't show your pet's name or what it's for.

The same record gives you a downloadable vaccine card with an optional QR code for a kennel or groomer. It works with any clinic. If your clinic is on PetGrid, you get its reminders too, like the one the day before a visit. One thing to know: the free app sends email and phone notifications, not text messages.

Questions fréquentes

What is the best app for pet vaccine reminders?

The best one keeps a separate due date for each vaccine, repeats on the interval your vet chose, and alerts you on more than one channel. It should also hold the vaccine record itself and work with any clinic.

How often does my dog need vaccine boosters?

It depends on the vaccine and on your dog. WSAVA's 2024 guidelines say most core vaccines give immunity for many years while most non-core vaccines last about one year, so your vet sets the interval for each one.

How do I know when my pet's rabies booster is due?

Look at the rabies certificate from your vet. In Ontario, it has to show the date by which your pet is to be reimmunized, and the law requires the booster by then.

Can an app tell me which vaccines my pet needs?

No, and it shouldn't try. Which vaccines your pet needs, and when, is your vet's call, based on age, health, lifestyle and local disease risks.

Do I still need reminders if my vet sends them?

It's safest to have both. Clinic reminders are worth keeping, but your own keep working if you move, change email or see more than one clinic.

En bref

A pet vaccine reminder app is only as good as the dates you give it. Start from your vet's record, give each vaccine its own due date, and pick an app that reaches you on more than one channel.

PetGrid is free for pet owners and works with any clinic. If you'd like to see the whole thing first, how it works walks through it in a few steps.
